The Department of Training was established on 1 December 1993, following the amalgamation of the former Department of Employment, Vocational Education and Training (DEVET) and the State Employment and Skills Development Authority (SESDA). The Office of Industrial Training is a sub-department of the Department of Training.

The Departments of Education and Training were merged on 3 February 2003. The Department of Education and Training (DET) is the key agency in realising the State government's strategic objective of developing 'an educated and skilled future for all Western Australians'. This involves the attainment of more precise outcomes at the agency level and in this regard DET is funded to achieve the following government-desired outcome for school education: a quality education for all Western Australians who choose government schooling and the following government-desired outcome for vocational education and training: maximise training and employment opportunities for Western Australians. During 2003-2004, DET operated through four outputs: (1) Primary Education (K-7); (2) Secondary Education (8-12); (3) Vocational Education and Training Services; and (4) Employment Programs. From 2004-2005, the State government required agencies' annual reports to reflect their contributions to the achievement of government goals and strategic outcomes described in Planning: Better Planning: Better Services, the strategic planning framework for the public sector. It contains five goals for government under the headings People and Communities, The Economy, The Environment, The Regions and Governance. Therefore, unlike previous DET Annual Reports, which were structured in terms of outputs, annual reports are structured in terms of the five goals from this date. Employment Programs was merged with Vocational Education and Training Services in 2005-2006.

In previous years TAFE has been included within the annual report of the Ministry of Education. As TAFE is now a department in its own right, a separate annual report is being submitted. This report contains the general and financial information for the financial year ending 30 June 1990, together with an account of operations and achievements in the relevant parts of the academic year 1989 and 1990. As the 1989-90 financial year ends midway through the 1990 academic year, most of the statistics and performance indicators in this report are for the 1989 academic year. Show less

The Department of Employment, Vocational Education and Training (DEVET) was established on January 1, 1992 following the amalgamation and abolition of the former Departments of TAFE and Employment and Training. The former Division of Industrial Training was established as the Office of Industrial Training, a sub-department of DEVET, effective from January 7, 1992. The fee-for-service operations of the former Department of TAFE were placed under the auspices of a College of Customised Training, established under the Colleges Act and gazetted on December 13, 1991. An interim council was subsequently gazetted on July 7, 1992 under the Colleges Act. As a Statutory Authority, the college is required to provide a separate annual report. This report contains general and financial information for Central Office, and a short report for each college, the Kimberley Centres and the Office of Industrial Training. Show less
